Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) created a historic moment for India on the evening of 23 August 2023.

Chandrayaan-3, a spacecraft of India, successfully soft-landed on the South Pole of the moon; something which has never been achieved before by any country.

Along with being the first country to reach the South Pole of the moon, India became the fourth nation to successfully soft land on the moon. The other three nations are – America, Russia, and China.

Chandrayaan-3 has a lander named ‘Vikram’ and a rover named ‘Pragyan’. All the experiments currently being performed on the surface of the moon are being carried out by the rover Pragyan.

Both the lander and the rover have a mission life of 1 lunar day which is equivalent to 14 days on Earth.

During this duration, the scientists of ISRO will receive data regarding the soil, rocks & craters, and, water on the moon.

After the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, the chief of ISRO, S Somnath offered his prayers at Pournamikavu, Bhadrakali Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

During his visit, he talked to the journalists and stated that India has the capability to travel to the Moon, Mars, and Venus; and that we just need to boost our confidence.

He informed that the lander and the rover of Chandrayaan-3 are in good condition. All five devices on board have been turned on and are giving data.

Giving further updates on the mission, S Somnath shared that 'Pragyan' has successfully covered a distance of 8 meters on the lunar surface and all its payloads are working properly.

He also expressed that for more development in the space sector, more investment is needed.

Mr Somnath has stated before that due to the failure of Chandrayaan-2, the previous attempt to reach the moon, nothing of that mission could be recovered.

Chadrayaan-3 was made from scratch in the given budget of Rs. 615 crores. Chandrayaan-2 was allotted a budget of Rs 978 crores.

Celebrating the success of Chandrayan-3, 23rd August was declared National Space Day by the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi. Along with this, the landing site of lander Vikram was named ‘Shiv-Shakti’, and the impact site of Chandrayaan-2 was named ‘Tiranga’.

Before India’s attempt to reach the south pole of the moon, Russia had also launched a spacecraft, Luna-25, into space.

Luna-25 crashed into the moon before its landing and the reason given for this was the uneven surface of the moon. The research done by ISRO scientists and prayers of crores of Indians helped Chandrayaan-3 escape this fate.

Chandrayaan-3, the mission of ISRO has brought immense pride and joy to the nation. Data acquired through Chandrayaan-3 will be beneficial for both India and the world.

This will increase the limited space knowledge and help in further missions of space exploration. Following the success of this mission, ISRO has planned to launch another spacecraft, Aditya L1 on 2nd September, 2023 to study the activities of the sun in the solar system.
