Every year on October 31, Bharat observes Rashtriya Ekta Diwas to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India. Beyond a symbolic tribute, the day reminds us of Patel’s monumental work in uniting a fragmented nation and inspiring the vision of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

When the British left Bharat in 1947, they left behind more than 560 princely states, each with its own ruler, currency, and military. The idea of a united Bharat seemed almost impossible. It was Patel’s extraordinary will, political wisdom, and deep patriotism that turned that idea into a reality.

The Indian Independence Act had granted these princely states the choice to join Bharat or Pakistan, or to remain independent. Patel used a combination of negotiation, diplomacy, and firm action to ensure that Bharat did not splinter. As the head of the States Department, he secured the accession of most princely states by or shortly after August 15, 1947, laying the foundations of a unified nation.

His calm yet firm leadership during the chaos of partition earned him the title the Iron Man of India. Patel also established the All India Services, often called the Steel Frame of India, ensuring administrative stability and continuity for the young nation.

When Was It First Celebrated?

National Unity Day was first observed in 2014 after the Government of Bharat announced its decision to recognise Sardar Patel’s extraordinary role in nation-building.

On Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative to strengthen the bonds of cultural and social unity among the states and regions of Bharat.

Since then, various ministries, state governments, academic institutions, and youth organisations have actively observed the day with activities promoting national integration and unity across the country.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Kashmir

In 1947, as Patel worked tirelessly to integrate the princely states with precision, the Kashmir issue was handled by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The handling of this matter became one of the gravest setbacks in Bharat’s early years, as Kashmir turned into a gateway for terrorism for decades to come.

When Pakistan-backed tribal forces invaded Kashmir in October 1947, it was Patel who immediately rushed troops and arms to defend the region. However, his firm and decisive approach was constrained by Nehru, whose inept handling of foreign and security affairs proved disastrous for the nation.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas serves as a powerful reminder of Patel’s legacy. His vision of a united Bharat, his administrative foresight, and his unwavering resolve continue to inspire generations to uphold national integrity and unity.
