Between 2022 and 2026, Telangana witnessed a series of incidents involving Hindu temples, religious processions and political statements that generated significant public discourse. While the state government maintained that many actions were taken within administrative or legal frameworks, critics and community groups argued that these developments reflected institutional interference in Hindu religious affairs.

The following account outlines nine prominent incidents that became flashpoints in the broader debate over religious governance and temple autonomy.

1. Vandalism at Sri Dwimukhi Hanuman Mandir (February 24, 2026)

An idol at the Sri Dwimukhi Hanuman Mandir in Barkas, Hyderabad, was desecrated after unidentified individuals allegedly broke the iron grill and damaged the structure. The incident sparked anger among devotees and local residents.

Subsequently, police action at the site, including the temporary restriction placed on priests from reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, became a matter of controversy. Devotees demanded enhanced temple security and accountability from authorities, while law enforcement registered a case and initiated investigation procedures.

2. High Court Intervention in Shree Shyam Baba Nishan Yatra (February 2026)

The Telangana High Court heard a writ petition seeking permission for the annual Shree Shyam Baba Nishan Yatra in Hyderabad.

The state opposed the permission by citing previous violations and a pending criminal case related to the procession. The court, however, directed authorities to evaluate the application carefully, verify the backgrounds of the organisers, assess potential law and order concerns, and issue a reasoned decision consistent with constitutional provisions.

The case highlighted continuing tensions between administrative discretion and the rights associated with religious processions.

3. Remarks by A. Revanth Reddy (December 3, 2025)

During a party meeting, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made remarks referencing the diversity of Hindu deities in a political analogy. The comments triggered sharp criticism from opposition parties.

Several political leaders described the remarks as disrespectful towards religious sentiments and demanded a public apology. The controversy drew widespread political attention across the state and intensified debates about sensitivity and responsibility in political speech.

4. Demolition of Peddamma Talli Temple (July 25, 2025)

Authorities demolished the Peddamma Talli Temple in Banjara Hills, which devotees described as a shrine more than a century old. The demolition sparked protests by local residents and devotees, who alleged that the action targeted a place of worship.

Police intervened to disperse the demonstrators and made several arrests. The government maintained that the demolition was carried out on administrative grounds, while critics described the move as insensitive towards religious heritage and community sentiments.

5. Police Intervention During Ayyappa Puja (December 25, 2024)

Police intervened during an Ayyappa puja in Hyderabad, citing violations of noise regulation norms.

Devotees alleged selective enforcement and described the intervention as interference in a legitimate religious observance. Authorities, however, defended their actions by stating that they were acting in accordance with public order regulations and existing guidelines.

The incident revived discussions about how authorities balance religious practices with regulatory enforcement.

6. Social Media Controversy Involving Kumbam Anil Kumar Reddy (June 17, 2024)

A Bakrid greeting posted on social media by Congress MLA Kumbam Anil Kumar Reddy featured an image of a cow. The post quickly attracted criticism from sections of the Hindu community.

Opponents argued that the imagery was insensitive towards Hindu sentiments. The issue soon evolved into a broader political debate and gained traction across several social media platforms.

7. Denial of Permission for Ram Navami Procession (April 17, 2024)

Hyderabad police denied permission for a Ram Navami procession for which an application had been submitted by BJP MLA T. Raja Singh.

Authorities cited law and order concerns as the reason for the decision. Supporters of the procession described the denial as discriminatory, while police stated that the decision was taken after following established assessment protocols.

8. Disposal of Prasadam at Bhadradri Sri Seetha Ramachandra Swamy Temple (January 10, 2023)

Approximately 50,000 laddus prepared as prasadam for devotees were destroyed after mould was detected following temple festival celebrations.

Temple authorities stated that the decision was taken due to health and safety considerations. However, tension arose when police inspected the temple kitchens, with some temple staff alleging that religious sensitivities were not adequately respected during the inspection process.

9. Temple Fund Contribution Order (September 22, 2022)

The state Endowment Department directed three temples, including the Bhadrakali Temple, to contribute ₹1 crore each towards the construction of a government office building.

Temple committees and community organisations strongly protested against the directive. They argued that funds donated for religious purposes should not be diverted towards government infrastructure.
