Over the past 12 years, the narrative surrounding women in Bharat has undergone a profound paradigm shift. Moving away from the traditional framework of "women's development", the governance model under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has actively championed the vision of "women-led development". By placing Nari Shakti (Woman Power) at the centre of policymaking, the government has systematically addressed the historical challenges faced by Bharat's silent majority, empowering them economically, socially, and politically.

Here is a comprehensive look at the landmark schemes and reforms implemented between 2014 and 2026 that have catalysed this transformation.

Restoring Dignity in Daily Life

For decades, the most basic needs of rural women were often overlooked. The government recognised that true empowerment begins with health, safety, and dignity at the grassroots level.

Swachh Bharat Mission

By constructing over 11 crore household toilets, this initiative eliminated the indignity and safety risks women faced due to open defecation.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

Launched in 2016, PMUY provided over 10 crore free LPG connections to women in Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. This freed women from the hazardous smoke of traditional biomass fuels, significantly improving their respiratory health and saving countless hours of labour.

Jal Jeevan Mission

By providing tap water connections to millions of rural households, this scheme eliminated the arduous daily journeys women and girls had to undertake to fetch water, freeing up their time for education and economic activities.

Driving Financial Autonomy and Ownership

Economic independence is the cornerstone of empowerment. The Modi government has implemented targeted schemes to ensure women have access to capital, property ownership, and modern skills.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)

In a major push towards female property ownership, over 72% of the houses sanctioned under the rural housing scheme (PMAY-G) are solely or jointly owned by women, fundamentally reshaping household power dynamics.

Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana

Designed to fund the unfunded, this scheme provides collateral-free loans for micro-enterprises. Significantly, nearly 70% of Mudra loan beneficiaries have been women, sparking a wave of grassroots female entrepreneurship.

Lakhpati Didi Initiative

This flagship rural economic programme aims to enable women in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to earn a sustainable annual income of at least ₹1 lakh. By 2025, more than 2 crore women had already achieved this milestone.

NaMo Drone Didi

Bridging the gender gap in modern technology, this forward-looking scheme trains thousands of SHG women to operate drones for agricultural purposes, creating a new avenue for high-tech livelihoods in rural Bharat.

Social Security and Educational Equality

A society cannot progress if its daughters are left behind. The past 12 years have witnessed robust interventions aimed at protecting the girl child and ensuring her continuous development.

Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao

Launched to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR), this nationwide campaign helped transform societal attitudes, resulting in a healthier sex ratio at birth and improved gross enrolment ratios for girls in schools.

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)

This high-interest savings scheme was specifically designed to secure the financial future of the girl child, ensuring families have the resources required to support her higher education.

Mission Shakti

This umbrella programme provides a comprehensive lifecycle of support for women. It includes the establishment of over 800 One Stop Centres to assist women facing violence, alongside 24/7 helplines and Nari Adalats (women's courts) for alternative dispute resolution.

Historic Political and Legal Reforms

Empowerment remains incomplete without representation and legal protection. The government has enacted landmark legislation and reforms to ensure women have a decisive voice in the nation's future.

Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam

Perhaps the most significant democratic reform of the 21st century, this historic constitutional amendment reserves 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. It ensures that the silent majority will become active lawmakers, shaping Bharat's destiny.

Abolition of Triple Talaq

By criminalising the regressive practice of instant divorce, the government ensured legal protection, equality, and constitutional dignity for millions of Muslim women.

Shattering the Glass Ceiling in Defence

Under Prime Minister Modi's tenure, the Armed Forces witnessed the opening of permanent commissions for women and the historic admission of female cadets into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Sainik Schools.

The Path Forward

The past 12 years reflect a cohesive strategy in which policy meets purpose. By addressing foundational needs such as sanitation and clean fuel, expanding opportunities for financial independence through property ownership and entrepreneurial loans, and culminating in historic political representation, the Modi government has worked to ensure that Nari Shakti becomes a driving force behind Bharat's development journey.
