Ranka’s Pakistan Connection? From Gavi to AAP and Beyond

 

CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka’s professional history spans two stints at Gavi, political activity linked to AAP, and work with Kinaura Partners, prompting questions about overlapping roles, disclosures and potential conflicts of interest in public life.

 

Ashutosh Ranka has become a visible face of the Cockroach Janata Party, frequently seen at protests and campaigns against the government. A closer examination of his professional record reveals a network that runs through global public-health bodies, philanthropic institutions linked to George Soros, and during his second stint at Gavi, a former Pakistani senator and minister who served directly under Imran Khan. The chronology raises legitimate questions of transparency, overlapping political activity and institutional affiliations that the public is entitled to examine.

 

 

Ranka first worked with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, from May 2021 to July 2022. He returned in October 2024 as an independent, part-time consultant and remained in that role until September 2025. By the time of his second stint, Gavi was headed by Dr Sania Nishtar, who assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on 18 March 2024.

 

Nishtar was not a neutral technocrat who happened to be Pakistani. Between 2018 and 2022 she served as Special Assistant to then Prime Minister Imran Khan on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation, holding the status of a Federal Minister. She had earlier served as a Federal Minister in Pakistan’s 2013 caretaker government. A 2020 Telegraph profile identified her as the official tasked with building Ehsaas, the PTI government’s flagship social-protection programme that became central to Khan’s political messaging on poverty, education, malnutrition and welfare.

 

When Ranka rejoined Gavi as a part-time consultant in October 2024, the organisation was therefore led by a senior figure from Imran Khan’s political establishment. No public evidence shows that Nishtar personally recruited or supervised Ranka. The timing, however, places his second stint squarely under her leadership. For an Indian political activist now speaking for CJP, the institutional overlap with a former Pakistani minister warrants clear disclosure rather than silence.

 

 

Ranka’s second Gavi stint coincided with visible political engagement on behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party. An Instagram post dated 20 February 2025 shows him posing with Arvind Kejriwal. In the caption Ranka described Kejriwal as the person who had “inspired me like no one else,” declared himself ready to be “slightly shameless,” and stated that “AK is as determined as ever,” adding that exciting developments were forthcoming.

 

A further post on 18 March 2025 records Ranka’s participation in an AAP-related press interaction against an AAP backdrop. The accompanying text discusses the state of government schools in Rajasthan and tags both the AAP Rajasthan handle and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia.

 

 

Both posts were made while Ranka remained listed as a part-time Gavi consultant. Employment by an international organisation does not bar personal political activity. It does, however, raise the straightforward question of whether that activity was disclosed to the employer and whether any conflict-of-interest protocols were observed. Ranka’s own words present him as more than a casual admirer; they indicate personal investment in AAP’s political trajectory at the same time he held a consultancy with a global health body headed by a former Pakistani minister.

 

 

Ranka’s public political footprint did not begin with the CJP. The social-media record shows an established association with AAP leadership and messaging before his emergence as a CJP spokesperson. Movement between political platforms is common among activists. What requires scrutiny is the overlap of professional roles with international organisations and concurrent partisan activity, followed by a shift into another political vehicle.

 

 

Ranka’s first period at Gavi coincided with a significant institutional arrangement. In April 2022 Gavi entered a roughly US 200 million dollar COVAX risk-sharing facility with MedAccess and the Open Society Foundations. The arrangement involved procurement guarantees of up to US 100 million dollar each from MedAccess and the Soros Economic Development Fund, intended to facilitate additional COVID-19 vaccine procurement.

 

There is no evidence that Ranka personally received funds from this facility or negotiated it. Linking an individual employee directly to George Soros on that basis would be inaccurate. The arrangement does, however, form part of the institutional ecosystem in which Ranka worked: Gavi maintained a formal financial relationship involving the Open Society Foundations. That network is a relevant context when assessing the professional environment of a person who later became a political spokesperson in India.

 

 

Gavi is not the only international entity in Ranka’s record. He has also been associated with Global Health Visions, later renamed Kinaura Partners, a consultancy operating in the global-health sector. His professional profile lists him as a Senior Associate. The firm’s public material has referenced work connected to immunisation, infectious diseases, health policy and major international organisations and philanthropic foundations. The precise nature and duration of Ranka’s role, the clients served, and any disclosures made remain unclear from publicly available material.

 

Activist Vijay Patel’s highlighting of Ranka’s affiliations drew attention to the disappearance of certain professional information from organisational websites. The association continued to appear on Ranka’s LinkedIn profile. Website redesigns and staff departures occur routinely, since then.

 

 

Ranka’s background is notable not for any single association but for the combination of visible political activity with AAP and its leadership, professional engagement with Gavi both before and during Sania Nishtar’s tenure as CEO, association with a global-health consultancy, and employment within an organisation that maintained an institutional relationship involving the Open Society Foundations, forming a network that intersects international public health, philanthropic funding channels and Indian political activism.

 

As a political spokesperson and public campaigner, his professional history is a matter of legitimate public interest, with the available record showing concurrent political activity and international consultancy roles; basic questions therefore remain about the exact nature of his responsibilities and payment during both stints at Gavi, whether his AAP activities were disclosed, the precise role he played at Global Health Visions/Kinaura Partners, why information about his professional association was reportedly removed after public scrutiny, and whether any further institutional or financial relationships have been left off the record.

 

 

These are questions of transparency and potential conflicts of interest, and for someone who now presents himself as a political activist and CJP’s spokesperson, clear answers rather than opacity are the minimum standard the public can reasonably expect.
