A significant case of religious conversion has recently come to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district. Investigations have revealed that Hindu youths were lured into converting to Islam through false promises and psychological manipulation. They were reportedly shown dreams of marrying multiple times, attaining wealth, and leading a luxurious life. Shockingly, even differently abled individuals were targeted and subjected to such brainwashing tactics, ultimately leading to their forced conversion.
A few days ago, the police rescued blind professor Prabhat Upadhyay from a madrasa. He was being held hostage and was being forced to convert. The process of circumcision was underway in the madrasa when the police raided the premises and freed him. The conversion gang had already named him ‘Hamid’. Four accused, including madrasa maulvi Abdul Majeed, Salman, and Mohammad Arif, have been arrested. Zakir Naik’s CD, a conversion certificate, suspicious transactions in 22 bank accounts and clues related to foreign funding were recovered from the accused.
As per a Dainik Bhaskar report, on 31 August 2025, when their team reached Kareli village in Subhash Nagar and Faiznagar, they found that the accused Salman and Mohammad Arif had converted Brijpal and even his mother and sister to Islam. These individuals had also converted Piyush and a minor from Faiznagar. The people of the village are terrified of this gang and fear that one day their children might become victims.
The gang operated a 'honeytrap' via WhatsApp. They had more than 20 WhatsApp groups where photos and videos were uploaded daily. Slowly, Hindu youths were trapped by uploading obscene photos and videos. If a youth showed interest, he was called to the madrasa, where girls were tasked with brainwashing them. The Maulana would explain to the Hindu youths that if they wanted four wives, 'Jannat' (paradise) and a luxurious life, they should become Muslims.
During these brainwashing sessions, Hindu gods and goddesses were abused and insulted. The gang members, while explaining the benefits of Islam, also shared how one could easily accept the religion. The gang explained that the benefits included four wives, a house, servants, money and other things. The targeted youths were taught Urdu, the Quran and Hadith. They were also told that they would get a chance to become a Maulana or Maulvi.
In the case involving Prabhat, the arrested Abdul Majeed trapped Piyush by sending photos and videos of his sister Ayesha. Piyush was first called to a madrasa and enticed with the chance to marry Ayesha, but first, he was asked to convert to Islam. After brainwashing Piyush, he was circumcised. He was given a new name, Mohammad Ali. Gradually, Piyush himself became part of the gang and started offering namaz five times a day.
This madrasa in Bareilly was established in 2014. Police investigation has so far revealed the conversion of six people in Bareilly. However, this figure may increase further.
The mastermind of the 'jihad' was Abdul Majeed. He had distributed tasks among his gang members. One member, Salman, worked as a tailor, but his real job was to provide books, CDs and other material related to Islam. Arif used to help him. Another member, Faheem, ran a barber shop. He had all the information about the people coming to his shop and would share it with Majeed.
The police suspect that these people used to collect donations from different states and run the conversion business with this money. In view of these huge transactions, the agencies are investigating the possibility of funding from other countries, including Pakistan.
Superintendent of Police Anshika Verma stated that the network of the conversion racket is not confined to Bareilly alone but extends across several states in the country. The prime accused, Abdul Majeed, has a travel history linked to more than 27 districts. Authorities have recovered ₹13 lakh from his bank account, along with cheque books from multiple banks and details of 21 other accounts. The police have indicated that more arrests are likely in connection with the case. This incident once again highlights the alarming scale and seriousness of such organised conversion gangs, which pose a significant threat to social harmony.
