A series of incidents reported between 2021 and January 2026 across multiple Indian states, along with one overseas case in Australia, has drawn attention to repeated acts of desecration at Hindu religious sites. In most cases, the alleged acts involved jihadi Muslims entering temple premises and engaging in offensive conduct such as urination on idols, sacred objects, or temple walls. Several incidents were captured on video and circulated widely on social media, prompting police intervention and legal action.

Recent incident in Telangana (January 2026)

The most recent case was reported on 10 January 2026 from Malkajgiri in Hyderabad, Telangana. A 26-year-old man, identified as Altaaf, a resident of Bidar in Karnataka, was arrested for allegedly entering the Katta Maisamma Temple at Safilguda and urinating in front of the deity’s idol.

Incidents reported in 2025

In December 2025, police in Fatehabad, Haryana, registered a case following complaints that individuals associated with a madrasa and a mosque deliberately spat and urinated near the Gorakhnath Temple in Tohana. Sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita were invoked after written complaints were submitted by local residents.

Earlier, in October 2025, an incident from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh involved an individual allegedly urinating on a Shivling near a Durga Temple. Police action followed public protests demanding accountability.

Another case from Dewas in Madhya Pradesh involved a minor accused of sitting on a Jain idol while wearing shoes and uploading images on social media. Police registered a case following complaints from the community.

Incidents from 2024

Several cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan during 2024. These included incidents in Lucknow, Aligarh, Sitapur, Indore and Jodhpur, where individuals were accused of urinating on temple walls or engaging in offensive behaviour inside temple premises. In most cases, videos circulated online led to arrests under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

In December 2023, Dehradun Police arrested a man after a video surfaced allegedly showing him urinating at the entrance of a Kali Temple in the Harrawala area.

Similar incidents were reported in Murshidabad in West Bengal, Indore and Meerut between 2022 and 2023, each followed by police cases under sections related to hurting religious sentiments.

A notable overseas incident was reported in Sydney, Australia, in August 2023, where a woman allegedly desecrated a private Hindu shrine. The matter was investigated by New South Wales Police after CCTV footage emerged.

The recurrence of such acts has begun to raise concerns about jihadi radicalisation or contempt among Muslims, both within the country and abroad. In Indian history, Islamic invaders are described as having a long record of attacking the Hindu faith by looting and destroying places of worship. Law enforcement agencies have consistently clarified that these are criminal acts by Muslims driven by a jihadi mentality, and that, in one form or another, they are seen as representing the ideology of Islamic jihad.
