For decades, Bharat's foreign policy was often characterised by a defensive posture of "non-alignment", accompanied by a hesitation to assert its civilisational strength and geopolitical leverage. Over the past 12 years, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this paradigm has undergone a seismic shift. Bharat has transformed itself into a confident protagonist on the world stage. Today, the world increasingly relies on Bharat.

Bharat now stands as a Vishwamitra, a reliable, resilient, and indispensable friend to the world. Guided by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ("The World is One Family"), the Modi government has orchestrated a masterclass in multi-alignment, transforming Bharat's economic scale, diplomatic influence, and technological prowess into undeniable global prominence.

Here is a look at how 12 years of visionary governance have rewritten Bharat's destiny on the global stage.

The Economic Engine of the World

Diplomatic leverage is inextricably linked to economic strength. When Prime Minister Modi assumed office in 2014, Bharat was part of the "Fragile Five", ranking as the world's tenth-largest economy with a GDP of approximately $2 trillion. By the end of this 12-year cycle, the transformation has been staggering.

Ascension to the Top Three

Bharat has leapfrogged several global powerhouses, including its former coloniser, the United Kingdom, to become the world's fifth-largest economy. It is now on a clear trajectory, as validated by the IMF and Morgan Stanley, to become the third-largest economy by 2027, crossing the $4.5 trillion mark.

Magnet for Global Capital

Between 2014 and 2024, Bharat attracted an unprecedented $600 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), a testament to global confidence in its macroeconomic stability, regulatory reforms, and the "Make in India" initiative.

Export Milestones

Bharat's overall exports, comprising both merchandise and services, crossed the historic $750 billion mark in recent years. This achievement signals a shift from a consumption-led economy to a manufacturing and service-exporting powerhouse.

The G20 Watershed and the Voice of the Global South

The crowning jewel of Bharat's diplomatic resurgence was its G20 Presidency. Rather than treating it as a routine bureaucratic exercise, Prime Minister Modi transformed it into a mass movement and a platform for asserting Southern leadership.

Consensus in a Divided World

Amid severe global polarisation resulting from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Bharat achieved what many considered impossible by securing 100 per cent consensus on the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration.

Including the Excluded

Through extensive diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Modi championed and secured the permanent membership of the African Union, representing 55 nations, in the G20. This move solidified Bharat's status as the undisputed Voice of the Global South.

Digital Diplomacy: Exporting the Bharat Stack

Historically, the West exported technology to the East. The Modi government reversed this narrative by creating world-class Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), which has become a cornerstone of Bharat's soft power.

Globalising UPI

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) handles billions of transactions every month. Today, Bharat's digital payment architecture is being adopted or integrated across the globe, with countries such as France, the UAE, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius embracing the technology.

A Model for the Developing World

Institutions such as the World Bank have lauded Bharat's DPI, noting that Bharat achieved in less than a decade what would have taken 50 years through traditional means. By offering this open-source architecture to other developing nations, Bharat is helping them accelerate their own financial inclusion journeys.

A Net Security Provider and First Responder

A true global leader steps forward in times of crisis. Over the past 12 years, Bharat has evolved from a nation reliant on foreign aid into a leading provider of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

Vaccine Maitri

During the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, while many developed nations hoarded vaccine doses, Bharat supplied more than 300 million doses to over 100 countries, living up to its reputation as the "Pharmacy of the World".

Crisis Evacuations

The Modi government demonstrated an unmatched capability to protect its citizens and allies worldwide. Whether through Operation Raahat in Yemen, Operation Ganga in Ukraine, or Operation Ajay in Israel, Bharat not only evacuated members of its own diaspora but also rescued citizens from dozens of other countries.

Operation Dost

When devastating earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria, Bharat was among the first nations to deploy National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and medical relief. The mission demonstrated that Bharat's humanitarianism transcends political differences.

Strategic Autonomy and Defence Indigenisation

Perhaps the boldest shift in Bharat's global posture has been its unapologetic pursuit of strategic autonomy. Bharat no longer yields to pressure from Western blocs or Eastern alliances. Instead, it aligns itself solely with its national interests.

Defying Sanctions for Energy Security

Despite immense international pressure during the European conflicts, the Modi government prioritised the interests of Indian citizens by procuring discounted Russian oil. This helped keep domestic inflation under control while simultaneously strengthening ties with the United States through the Quad and critical technology initiatives such as iCET.

From Importer to Exporter

In 2014, Bharat was primarily recognised as the world's largest arms importer. Driven by the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, defence exports have increased by an astounding 30 times over the past decade, crossing the historic ₹21,000 crore mark by 2024.

Bharat is now exporting BrahMos missiles to the Philippines and artillery systems to Armenia, establishing itself as a reliable defence partner.

Reclaiming Civilisational Glory

The 12 years of Prime Minister Modi's governance have redefined both how Indians view themselves and how the world perceives Bharat. Through landmark achievements such as the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the Moon's South Pole and extensive infrastructure transformation, Bharat has projected confidence, capability, and ambition.

The era of seeking external validation is over. By leveraging its demographic dividend, embracing digital innovation, asserting strategic independence, and acting as a compassionate Vishwamitra, Bharat under Narendra Modi has secured a seat at the highest table of global diplomacy.
